Jung II-woo and the Crew of “The Return of Iljimae”… and Food!

Jung II-woo was not only cold during the filming of Iljimae…but hungry!   Just look at him in this video:

Can he be any cuter than when the pop corn fall on the floor and he is all bashful? And I understood what he said when he opened the donut box!  “ka- shi  mog-og-yo”  it means
“Let’s eat together!”

Luckily for Jung II-woo and the cast of Iljimae, they were happily surprised by fans from his Fan Club  “Ilwoostory”.  They fed them Samgyetang (삼계탕), a ginseng chicken soup. Along with rice, and drinks.  Such a warm gesture!!!

Jung II-woo meets Sandara Park

There are so many gorgeous photos of Jung II-woo in this series…so I’ll start with a few from Episode 6.

If that is the original drawing by Ko Woo-young…Jung II-woo could not look anymore like his drawing…surreal!

Anyways, onto Episode 7…

During the filming of Iljimae, Jung II-woo had the joy of meeting someone who would become as he has stated in various opportunities his only female friend: Sandara Park. See here.  She is known more as Dara and she was one of the members of the music band called 2NE1. Sadly it disbanded recently.  If you have time read about her…She has a really amazing herstory!

Here is a short article where she talks about her role in The Return of Iljimae.

In The Return of Iljimae she played the daughter of a Japanese Couple, who save and nurse Iljimae back to health.  When he is recovered, he notices that she, Rie, their is very sick. Iljimae saves her by giving her parents the precious rare ginseng root. Rie’s family are ninja and soon Iljimae finds himself not only learning the skill of the ninja, but almost becoming the future husband of Rie…

Again, he looks so beautiful here…prepare to delight and delight!

WITAT

This story is a lot about a hurt man and his healing process… it’s great to reflect on ones own experiences with pain, love, life… how does one react? how does one heal?

I thought that the locking up of Iljimae by the monk was genious!  He was so angry, so out of himself, he needed a place where he could feel his pain without hurting others, to calm him and to help him rest mentally.  I really believe that time is such a key factor in digesting all emotions…and I have observed that the older you are the slower you tend to take on things.  Though it doesn’t happen on all people, I think many benefit from a greater ability to observe and even if they feel they just don’t react as fast. It may be in part experience, but  just like one’s body starts to slow down, so does the fueled emotion department of your brain.  One advantage of aging for sure!  Thank goodness!

I would have liked a monk like that at one point in my life!  A spiritual guide, a father figure…He gave Iljimae the space and time to heal without having to worry about money, food, shelter…  I can just picture him bringing him food and talking to him everyday. But winter…it would have been freezing!

I guess we all have our ways to heal our hearts…our minds.   For some it’s about talking to friends or a doctor. Others work on slowing the mind down from so much thought…meditating.   Some pray.  Some walk mountains, trails.  For me I tend to work a lot more.  And travel…anywhere with a waterfall!  Waterfalls are the most soothing sound to me!  (Part of my family descended from the Amazon Rainforest…maybe it has to do with that?!)

…Onto Rie and Iljimae.  I felt really sad for Rie when things did not work out between them, but I too think Kotaro was much better for her. Timing… sometimes it’s all about timing…at this point in time Iljimae could not feel that way for her… Iljimae’s heart is still so broken.  At least he ends the episode in a much better place than he was before…

About II-woo and Dara only time will tell if they are meant to be together… If not, they will always have their friendship…that is a great thing to share! And sometimes lasts  a lot longer…

This is a playlist of different videos made by Camille, a fan that has a YouTube Channel: 2NE1 BLACKPINK …she has four great videos with images from different dramas of Ilwoo and Dara.  Really well done videos!

Last but not least…This is Angel Falls, the highest waterfall in the world!  It’s located in Venezuela (where I was born).  Once I had the joy of seeing it…you just can’t believe your eyes!  So monumentally delightful!!!  🙂  화이팅!   Venezuelans!

Iljimae in Love and Jung II-woo’s First “Real” on-screen kiss!

This song is performed by Yoon Jin-seo.  She is the actress that plays Dal-yi and Wol-hee in The Return of Iljimae.  I made this video trying to include all the beautiful footage of Iljimae with his beloved Dal-yi.

“Iljimae in Love” is the title of episode 4. It is one of the happier episodes in the drama The Return of Iljimae. Iljimae meets the love of his life in this episode: Dal-yi. Dal-yi is played by Yoon Jin-seo. She is a mountain girl that is absolutely fascinated by the beauty of Iljimae.  (Welcome to the club!)  She is happy, open, kind, playful and fresh.   Though Iljimae is not much older, he is not like that…on him weigh many recent discoveries about his family and his land of origin that have robbed him from his worry free, comfortable childhood.  Even when she talks about having children, he is thinking about how he was abandoned as a child.  Little by little though, Iljimae starts to change and as he slowly falls in love with her and is accepted by the father of Dal-yi, and he is happier.

Jung II-woo’s is able to portray all these changes in Iljimae with great subtlety.  Nothing in his expressions is overdone.  You could say, that he has tamed the brusqueness of Yoon-ho, to a softer, disciplined, and more thoughtful Iljimae.   In a way you see Iljimae grow into a man as you see Jung II-woo grow into a better actor…and maybe a man too?

Here we get to see among other things, Jung II-woo’s real first kiss on-screen.  A kiss that is given to him! Now that I think about it, this is the third time it happens to Jung II-woo.  In “Unstoppable High Kick”, the teacher kissed him) thinking he was his uncle), in “My Love” the girl kisses him in the cheek. And now in Iljimae, he gets pushed down and kissed by Dal-hi.  I found a video that shows the BTS of this first kiss.  It is so sweet to see! So get ready to delight! (Video Cr. Clip from  [ETN] At that time that the expression : Il-woo Jung & Jin-seo Yun in YouTube.)

I know right!  How could they cut it off there! Seriously!!!  And in the Episode too!  Well you can imagine the rest by looking at the photos:  (Photo Cr. MBC)

And this part…is really funny…when he changes into the pink Hanbok! And of course he had to go get a chicken dressed like that!  And…then kick some ass in it!  But the part that had me in stitches…was when he caught the chicken at the end of the fight!  What?!!!  How?!!! Hilarious!

WITAT

Well…no doubt it is Dal-hi who is Iljimae’s love of his life…!   I though it was funny that the their love starts with a chase!  There is something to be said about couples playing rough games or chasing games…many times it ends with love!  Happened to me!  I guess it’s the fastest way to break barriers!  It is a lot more fun too!  Maybe that’s the animal part still in us…

Jung II-woo…I wish with all my heart that you find the love of your life!

Jung II-woo and Lee Min-ho

As I have been reading about Jung II-woo I have bumped into various photos of him with Lee Min-ho. They have known each other since High school. They share the bond of a near life-death experience. They work in the same industry. They were especially close during 2006 and 2007, as Lee Min-ho was in the hospital for along time and Jung II-woo would visit him as much as he could. (This was as a result of the accident they had in 2006. As time went by they managed to keep in touch when they could.  I read something funny about them, it is that when they finally coincide in having time off they are very lazy to go out…they are so exhausted from filming their dramas they just want to be home!  Can you imagine!

By November of 2008, Jung II-woo had found out that his new work “The Return of Iljimae” had been pushed from a set November Premiere to January!  As his fans, he was really bummed about that!  But this did not stop him from being happy for his friend in his new drama “Boys over Flowers.”   You can see his message to his friend further down.  “Boys over Flowers” would air first: January 5, 2009, and “The Return of Iljimae” aired on January 21, 2009.  Though they aired close in time, they did not compete with each other as they were shown on different days.  Can you imagine it was something like Monday and Tuesday: Boys over Flowers and Wednesday and Thursday The Return of Iljimae! Heaven!  Drama wise!

Photos..I’ll post all I have found of 2006, 2007 and 2008 here.  I will post Jung II-woo with Kim Bum’s in the near future OK?!

Update: (June 1, 2017) Just found an article that talks a bit about their friendship…I guess their mother know each other too!  It’s further down, after the Cyworld Post.

Article from Sports World.  (Translated to English via Google Translate)

Jung Il, Lee Min-ho “Mothers are closely related to each other” … “Stimulate each other over competition”
Sports world | 2009.07.22 (Wed) 08: 11

I opened up the fact that Jeong Il is familiar with the ‘Hanao’ immigration issue and ‘Omchina’.

It is already known that Jeong Il and Lee Min-ho are among neighborhood friends. By the way, it was never known that both of us knew each other until we knew each other.

In an interview with Sports World on 21st, Jeong il revealed that “Mr. Lee Min-ho is a friend in the town who met and got acquainted from junior high school time and became acquainted quickly from university,” while “Mothers are also close to each other” . Jeon Il leaves in the end in 2006 MBC Every day When I rise to Stardom by “somewhat high kick!” When I rise to Stardom Jung Yi to Lee Min-ho is a calculation that was so-called “omcina” going well.

The situation was reversed. At the beginning of the year Lee Min-ho appeared in the role of Koo Jung-pyo in the KBS 2 TV drama “Hana Yori Dango” and became a ‘thunder’ star, Lee Min-ho also became ‘Omchina’ in Jung Il.

However, like some reports it is not competing with each other. Jung Il said, “I thought that Lee Min-ho went up to the rank of stars in” Boys Over Flowing Boys “and that” I really went “and in fact I also called” Congratulations “,” while I was in a very close relationship “It is more than stimulating as an actor rather than a competitive consciousness.”

Meanwhile, Jeong Il will appear in the role of lawyer Lee Tae-young at KBS 2 TV New Mizuki play “Requesting Ladies” on August 19, the first broadcast radio wave.

Last but not least, I wanted to include this beautiful writing:

On Friendship

(This is an excerpt from “The Prophet” by Kahlil Gibran…I consider this one of my rulebooks on life.)

Your friend is your needs answered.

He is your field which you sow with love and reap with thanksgiving.
And he is your board and your fireside.
For you come to him with your hunger, and you seek him for peace.

When your friend speaks his mind you fear not the “nay” in your own mind, nor do you withhold the “ay.”
And when he is silent your heart ceases not to listen to his heart;
For without words, in friendship, all thoughts, all desires, all expectations are born and shared, with joy that is unacclaimed.
When you part from your friend, you grieve not;
For that which you love most in him may be clearer in his absence, as the mountain to the climber is clearer from the plain.
And let there be no purpose in friendship save the deepening of the spirit.
For love that seeks aught but the disclosure of its own mystery is not love but a net cast forth: and only the unprofitable is caught.

And let your best be for your friend.
If he must know the ebb of your tide, let him know its flood also.
For what is your friend that you should seek him with hours to kill?
Seek him always with hours to live.
For it is his to fill your need, but not your emptiness.
And in the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, and sharing of pleasures.
For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed.

WITAT

“Boys over Flowers” and ‘The return of Iljimae”…really, how sweet that two men that met in high school would go on to have parallel careers.

“Boys over Flowers”  was the drama that won me over to the KDrama world and it really has the perfect combination to win a female heart!  I think I share this feeling with a lot of people!  South Korea owes a lot to Lee Min-ho and Kim Hyun-joong for that.  Kim Hyun-joon was my first KDrama crush!  I adored his angelic role as Ji-hoo in “Boys over Flowers.”  He looked so beautiful in all those pastels! And…  he loves Jan-di and Jun-pyo so much!  He’s just so beautiful to watch!  The dance at the end with Jan-di…is one of my favorite scenes ever!  Tears were flowing like crazy!!! I understand why she ends up with Jung-pyo, but I will always feel so sad for Ji-hoo.

With all respect to Kim Joon fans, there is a little playful part in me that wishes that Jung II-woo would have been the 4th F4…with Lee Min-ho, Kim Hyun-joong, and Kim Bum. He would have been with his two best friends at this time in the industry! But maybe his role would have been too overshadowed by Lee Min-ho and Kim Hyun-joong’s. Though I could see him being Ji-hoo (he certainly has the beauty for it), I feel that Kim Hyun-joong has a certain softness that Jung II-woo did not proyect at that time in his life… he was more like well…Yoon-ho!   I can’t explain it…but Kim Hyun-joong was just the perfect Ji-hoo!

In the end I believe that the lead role of Iljimae was much better for Jung II-woo.  He learned so much through this role. He became a man through it.  No role in Boys Over flowers would have given him that.  Iljimae was more complex a character and goes through such an ordeal!  He is more difficult to portray.  Jung II-woo was meant to be Iljimae!

Still can you imagine him in the photo:

Memories by Jung II-woo

I wanted to highlight one of Jung II-woo posts from 2009 from his Cyworld account. It really moved me when I read it.  It’s about memories…

I have read and heard Jung II-woo say that the time after a drama ends is especially sad for him.  He has been working with a group of actors and crew for so long!  It becomes such a part of his life!  Then it’s over, and just like that he finds himself with just …

I do not want to lose .. I want to lose ..

Everything is in memory.

Even if you want to erase,

I want to get back to you …

I do not want to lose those memories, no matter how hard I try.

My memories gradually disappear ..

Time passed is just a memory.

Could it be reversible?

It is unknown.

Nobody knows.

WITAT

This year as the school year ends, I say goodbye to students I have known for up to 7 years!  I have seen them grow up!  School ends in about two weeks and that’s probably why when I read this I was moved to tears.  If it would have been October I don’t think I would have been that sentimental.

I have a “Memory Wall” in my classroom… it has photos of  my students…of past faculty members.  It’s so full I can barely put anymore photos in it!  When I look at it…I remember the moments I have lived.   So many beautiful and sad memories… some have faded, some have stayed so bright and fresh in my head…

We all struggle with memories one way or another…and they are the way in which we connect to our reality. If we don’t remember we loose the knowledge of those moments we have lived and things we have learned. Some memories make us grateful for the times we have lived. Some memories make us really sad or angry and we want to forget them. They are stubborn and cling on to you until you have really let them go…you have forgiven, or the passing of time has brought you peace.  Then there are all those memories hidden within our subconscious mind…that we have no idea of, but mess with our heads sometimes!  What a brilliant creation the mind is!

Talking about mind … the memory of the masterpiece song “Memory” written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Trevor Nunn and performed like no other by Barbra Streisand “Memory” comes to mind!

The Return of Jung II-woo!

January 21, 2009

Just kidding!  Well only partly…It’s “The Return of Iljimae”, but it is also the return of Jung II-woo to the spotlight as he had been absent from it for about a year and half by the time this drama aired!

I wanted to clarify that the purpose when I highlight an episode is not to give a complete synopsis of the episode. Though sometimes I’ll talk about what happened in it, what I want to do more is to talk about Jung II-woo’s acting and development of the character he played, his feelings about it (if I can find out about them!) or interesting circumstances about the episode.  With The Return of Iljimae I will highlight some of the cinematography and aesthetics too.  How could I not!  This drama is just so beautiful to watch!

As I imagine happens with every drama and all the people who work in it and for it, there is a huge anticipation before the drama airs for the first time.  I’ve read and heard interviews about how Jung II-woo felt during this time.  I think I can sum it up in one word: unsure.  I heard him say in one interview that he had about 50 offers after Unstoppable High Kick but he did not take them because he did not think he was a good enough an actor. Then he took on Iljimae’s part (as he dropped Triple) and devoted his time to preparing for the part. This included lots of physical training.  He worked out for 7 hours a day! With all that personal investment, Jung II-woo was definitely nervous!  But there was some peace in his mind too: the thought of having giving it his best effort.  He mentioned in various interviews that he was mentally prepared for the comparisons between his portrayal of Iljimae and the previous SBS’s Iljimae by the actor Lee Yunki.

Before it aired, the director of The Return of Iljimae (Hwang In-roi) called Jung II-woo and told him not to care about the ratings numbers.  He told him that he was proud of the Iljimae that they had created and that no matter what the ratings were, they would continue to follow in the path they had set out.  I find this act extremely kind.

Fortunately for all, The Return of Iljimae aired and was rewarded with 18.5% ratings!!! First in its day/time slot, and held that spot for the Episode 2 as well.  Reviews favored Jung II-woo’s Iljimae, the great cast and the aesthetics of the drama. Below I include photos of both episodes.

About this first episode it was a bit hard to follow as it starts in current time, then goes back, and then further back again, to then end in current time.  I know right…what??!!  Yes, this confused a lot of people and something that annoyed many was the use of narration to tell the story.  Some hated it because it felt too much like a documentary.

Here are some photos of the beginning of Episode 1. These are of Iljimae in his black overcoat.   Cr. MBC and photos from the 10th Thank you Japanese Photo Book.

WITAT  (Spoiler alert!)

Of the story itself, I find it so sweet that it is a beggar and a monk that first rescue Iljimae and become sort of mom and dad to him. These characters are played by: Lee Kye-in (Jeol Chi) and Oh Young-soo (Monk Yeol-gong).

I also like the writer (Mr. Bae) and his young helper (Cha Dol) and how they become father and son. It’s good to see the rainbow of family possibilities! and the life situations that can make people family even if they are not blood related. There is a lot of this in Iljimae. They also provide the comedic relief in this series…which is so needed!!!  Kang Nam-gil is Mr. Bae and Lee Hyun-woo is Cha Dol.  (Yes he is a young man now!)

I thought the casting of the actors in this series was spot on!  I can never imagine anyone else in any of those roles.

However, this first episode of The Return of Iljimae was a bit convoluted for my taste. I think I understand what they tried to do: show how Iljimae has returned in the present time. But I think they could accomplish this in simpler ways… Just go from the present to way back and that’s that! I really don’t see the need to stop half way to then go further back…

Opening of The Return of Iljimae.

January 14, 2009

This was the promo for the premiere of The Return of Iljimae on January 21, 2009.  It is basically a short version of the actual opening of the drama.  One thing I loved about The Return of Iljimae all throughout was all the graphic design work, not only on the opening credits, but also the book that would flip its page. I also enjoyed the comparison between the comic and the drama images at the end of the drama (though I know this has been done in many other dramas that originate form comics.)  I will dedicate this post to the promo and opening and later on I will do one about the graphics.  Enjoy!

And this is the whole opening video of The Return of Iljimae:

WITAT

I play a lot of instrumental music while my students do their written work in class or  doing an art activities.  I decided to play the opening theme of Return of Iljimae from YouTube.  The response of my students (third graders) was immediate!  Wow…that music is cool!  It sounds like swords!  Is it swords? Before I knew it most boys had gathered around my laptop and were watching the opening video of The Return of Iljimae!  After commenting how awesome it was, then the funniest thing happened…one of the boys looking at Iljimae asked “Wait… is that a girl?”  I laughed so hard!!!  It’s what they kept saying in the drama!

So 8 years later…my third graders from Boston, USA, enjoyed Iljimae and the opening of the The Return of Iljimae!  How cool is that?!!!

Jung II-woo and “The Return of Iljimae” meets the press.

1497748432.jpgJanuary 7, 2009

Welcome back!  Ready for 2009 Jung II-woo delights?  Here we go!

Jung II-woo along with the cast attended this event that was held at a Seoul Theater. The points that stood out that related to Jung II-woo were about his journey as an actor in portraying the role, and how well would it do after SBS had released “Iljimae” about 6 months the previous year.

Jung II-woo talked about his journey, about training physically for 7 hours a day, and about shedding weight and his Yoon-ho smile.  The director said that one of the things he liked about Jung II-woo that was similar to Iljimae, was that both came from privileged good parents. (In the case of Iljimae he is referring to his adoptive parents!)  He said that Jung II-woo went on to endure hardship training and filming in the cold including sickness and that in that way it could compare to Iljimae’s own path of training and hardships.

The director Hwang In-roi, that when hearing that SBS would tackle the same subject and get air time before his project worried him a bit.  But he stated that “The Return of Iljimae” would be different.   SBS’s Iljimae did not have the rights to the original story and it concentrated more on the events surrounding his heroic life, while MBC owned the rights and they had kept close to the original story outlining not only his heroic side but a closer look at Iljimae’s personal life.

A really good article in English:
