One of the things in this great drama of the The Moon that Embraces the Sun that really impressed me was their traditional clothing. It was my first Sageuk, and I was mesmerized by the fabrics, their colors and of course the accessories! And as I am as ever curious, I decided to find out a bit more about them.
So… this is a special post about the traditional clothing that Jung II-woo wears in this drama and other Sageuk dramas he has done like “The Return of Iljimae.”
The traditional garment worn by both men and women is the “Hanbok.” It has nomadic roots in northern Asia and was established during the Goguryeo Kingdom (37 BCE- 668 CE). Its basic design has remained the same to this day! Its features consist of: a jeogori (저고리) the jacket, baji (바지) the pants and the chima (치마) skirt. However there are differences between the women’s and the men’s.
For men the Hanbok consists of two main parts: a jeogori (저고리): a long blouse-like top and a baji (바지), a type of traditional Korean pants. (baji (바지) is still pants in Korean.) Depending on what your status was in society, you got to wear your Hanbok made with different materials and colors. The kings, queens, crown princes, high-ranking court officials and ladies, and upper class people wore expensive materials such as silk and satin with bright colors like blue, red, green, and yellow. The middle-class and lower-class people always used fabric made from ramie, hemp, and cotton with light earth colors, for instance, brown, light blue, and green. These fabrics tended to last longer and withstand hard labor and did not require such high care.
Here is Jung II-woo wearing different Hanboks:
This is a closer look at his head wear. The men basically wore their hair only in two styles, in a bun called the “sangtu” (상투) or loose, sometimes tied into pony tails.
For women, the Hanbok has the jeogori (저고리): the blouse-like top part but much shorter, and a chima (치마): a long skirt. (chima (치마) is still skirt in Korean today.) Some women also wore baji (바지) pants under their skirts.
Isn’t she lovely! Here are a couple of more diagrams:
Most of the time, men wear another layer of clothing on top of them, which is generally known as durumagi (두루마기), or an overcoat. But there are other options for upper classmen:
Here are two great websites that will help you know the names of their items and many styles of traditional Korean clothing… there is a lot!
Shall we see Jung II-woo in traditional Korean clothing one more time? Please!!! (Some of these I found after the Episode Postings. Never too late right?)
By the way if you have ever wondered about “Sageuks,” or Historical Dramas, THIS is a well written article that covers some of the different kinds there are… and how much Korean historians dislike them as they distort the real history of Korea. Ha…seriously? Isn’t history always distorted anyways? I can tell you the history I was taught in Venezuela, is different to the history I learned in the USA, and I bet you if I went to South Korea, I would learn a different “history” there too. Then according to what country has more power, the USA historians in this case, would probably think the history taught in Venezuela and South Korea is distorted!
Never you mind… what a mess! How about some “herstory” for a serious distortion!!! Yeah…that would really make history! Ha! … I’m laughing this hard now:
This is why it’s good to travel, and read books from different countries and different perspectives including women’s, to get a more “worldly” understanding of human history, not just the one men in power in your country want you to believe!
With these episodes we say goodbye to The Moon that Embraces the Sun. It was my first “Sageuk” or Historical Korean Drama. And I have to say, for me it’s tied with The Return of Iljimae. More than the plot that is so dramatic, I enjoy looking at the cinematography in both where so many frames could stand as a photos on its own. So…credit to:
MBC and their amazing photographers and camera technicians! Bravo!!!

I’m pretty tired…but I wanted to say…
Whenever I see Jung II-woo with blood… I’m always so thankful that he is alive and well. It is good to know that even though he may get headaches, and feel uncomfortable at times he is alive, talking, eating… laughing! I can hear just him… and see him…
I’m just so glad that he is my fellow earthling, breathing the same air, seeing the same sky, even is we are half a world away…. this is absolutely nothing in relation to the universe!
Wow…our times coincide! Today is February 23rd! Anyways here are the episodes…get ready to delight!!!

Looking at this drama for a second time, I feel Jung II-woo’s character of Prince Yang Myung, could have been stronger. What I mean by this, is that Yeon-woo could have had more feelings for him. It would have made for a more interesting triangle of love. Here it’s more like two people in love with a third wheel… Remember the drama Boys over Flowers? There is a love triangle there too… but the female character Jan-di loves both of them! The men loved each other as best friends too, this is a real love triangle. You kept wondering… who is she going to pick? Loved the way they ended it too… Jun-pyo and Ji-hoo both ended up being part of her life…one as her future husband and one as her soulmate. It was interesting this separation of soulmate from a lover/husband too…as it can happen in some lives.
Have you ever been part of a triangle? I’m happy to say I have not… nor would I want to! It must be so hard! However, I have loved like Prince Yang… loved without correspondence. Once. It is absolutely heart breaking. Yet I don’t regret a single moment of feeling that love… it’s was so intense…so pure and beautiful.
I wonder if Jung II-woo has ever loved someone who did not correspond him… we fans would be like “What is wrong with her?”
I can’t believe either! A year has just gone by since I’ve started this website!
It has been such a joy in my life to see and dream… to “study” and post about this beautiful man. He really never disappoints! Seriously, if I had to vote in nominating a person to be cloned, it would be him! Beyond his talent and beauty, what a kind, lovely person he is! He has become a very important part of my life and whenever anyone asks me, who’s that on your phone, your mug… “That’s my Dream Man!” A dream I know I am happy to share with many… and believe me, this man needs all of our love!
Ready to delight in our dream man once more?

Thank you for visiting this site and making it what I had intended it to be. A place where you can delight in Jung II-woo and all he does. A place where you can learn about other things that relate to him too, like South Korea. (I know… I still have a lot to do in this department!)
Stats? I have some amazing stats from last year of this website… they enlighted me about the people who follow Jung II-woo and his delights. Take a look:
How amazing is that? Almost every country knows about Jung II-woo! Talk about a worldly person! That’s 1,131 views by the devoted fans of Taiwan!!! It’s really interesting huh? The first thing that was surprising to me, was the number of visitors! I started this website at the end of February, so you could project it to about 3,000 visitors in its first year and about 8,000 views! WOOW! Another thing that was surprising to me is that very few Korean people visit my website. I think it’s because, they are very well served with Daum Cafe and other Korean platforms.
The United States placing in Fifth place was yet another surprise! He has so many followers here! Hint… When are you coming again Jung II-woo? You could practice your English too! Talking about English, I’m glad to serve the English speaking community in general! If I had time I would translate all this to Spanish too. He has so many Spanish speaking followers too.
The most viewed page in my website after the home page is the one about his accident. This was sad to me in a way. But… I also understand it. People want to know what happened to him and how it affects his life. Amazingly enough if you Google Jung II-woo and the word accident, my site appears at the very top! (At least here in the USA) Almost 500 people looked at that page last year! As these numbers increase, I feel a sense of responsibility… is my information accurate? Is my spelling and grammar good? I am very thankful for this… but I never expected it! It’s actually a bit scary.
As I think about the future…and where I’d like to see jungilwoodelights go… I look forward to the time when I have all the years are filled in! Though I don’t want it to end too fast as I enjoy looking up and finding new information so much! I’d like jungilwoodelights to become one of the best databases of Jung II-woo in the world! I do not mark photos unless they are my artwork, because I do not own any of it! I personally believe all this information should be clean and free of markings unless they are from the drama broadcaster, the news or magazines, his representing company or his social media. As in life the more we try to possess, the less free we are!
I believe in crediting my sources… it’s common courtesy and it’s good Karma! So I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ilwoostory Japan, DC Inside, Daum Cafe, Dramabeans, Hancinema, Soompi (ilwoo aein, didixiaoyu), Ilwoo’s Room, fyeah Il Woo, Jungilwoo.com, Pintarest etc…for all your amazing work! You have been my main sources of information. In fact many photos can be traced back to these sites! If you ever have a problem with any of my posts do not hesitate and write to me at:
kdrama.fan13@gmail.com
Remember, I am your fellow Jung II-woo sister and I am full of good intention! Ultimately we want the world to know of our love: Jung II-woo!
Last but never least, Dearest, Loveliest, Kindest Jung II-woo, I wish you bump into my site someday and be happy to see all you have done! I chuckle every time I read you say “I wish I would have done more” …seriously?!!! And…if you ever have a problem with any of the content of this website, let me know! I try to think throughly before I post anything on this site, but I am as ever …
In spite of being so busy, Jung II-woo flew to Japan for about two days to participate in a “49 Days” Fan Meet with costars: Jo Hyun-jae (who played Han Kang) and Nam Gyu-ri (who played Shin Ji-hyun). This Fan Meet was attended by 2000 fans at the Shibuya Public Hall. During the Fan Meet all of them sang, they held a 49 Days photos Quiz and each Fan got a CD with the 49 OST and high fives by every actor! Poor actors, did your hands hurt after that? Ouch!
Update… I found some other photos that are absolutely beautiful! They are I think the same of some of the ones I found before, but with better resolution and signed by their photographer “RAM.” Please credit this person…their work deserves that! But…he’s wearing a coat…maybe these were the rehearsal ones?

This is an article. Cr. Osen. Via Ilwoostory Japan, translated with Google Translate:

In the domestic drama ‘Chun · Swan directing Kim · Dohn’ holding the sun ‘, Jeong il realizes hot popularity together domestically and overseas in ’49 days in Japan.
Jun Il who left Japan for the promotion of the 3rd day drama ’49 days’ participated in the ’49th’ promotion held at Shibuya public hall while fleeing over 2,000 fans, meaning with fans I spent a deep time.
In the spring of last year, Jeong il, who played an eccentric character at ‘Schedule’ on ’49 days’ airing in the country, enjoyed great interest and popularity overflowing as ‘Scheduler’ in Japan and returning I came. The freshness of the ‘Scheduler’ character which was also high in attention at the time of domestic broadcasting passed even in Japan. The fans gathered at the audience welcomed with a heated cheers and applause as soon as the scheduler Jung Yi showed on stage.
Chung Il participated in talk time and quiz events such as ’49th’ photography episode and impressions on the work at this promotion which was advanced for 3 hours, shared memories with fans, one copy at the end ’49 During the day ‘OST, he performed a direct show about’ Kakashi ‘, which he participated directly and decorated the show gaudy. Also, at the end of the fan meeting, we had high fives with each of the 2,000 fans who participated on this day and gave unlimited impression to the fans with fan service.
On this day Chung Il kept the audience seating with a bright smile and a kind stage manners all the time despite being unable to sleep well for days for the day before shooting the drama ‘Moon holding the sun’ It was said that it felt high likelihood from media gathering media and stakeholders, as well as the buried 2,000 fans. Because of the shooting schedule of ‘the moon holding the sun’ now, Jeon il who came to Japan arrived in a short schedule of two nights and it was unsatisfactory, and received the next visit to Japan.
What is even more surprising is that the drama ‘Moon holding the sun’, which is currently in the middle of shooting, has already gained popularity in the Japanese area, and each journalist and fans’ intensive The thing that gaze continued. Together with the previous work ‘Ikemenramen shop’ has also been broadcast on M – net japan, this also calls for an unrepentable response.
Jung Il who came back after finishing the promotion was much better, surprised and happier than the response to ” 49 ” It is something to prepare a lot of things for the current drama filming I only thank you for sending me a big love though it was impossible, I thank you for a short time but I hope to see you again in the distance “.
Meanwhile, Jeong il, who returned home on Saturday after the ’49th’ success of Japan promotion, returned to the shooting scene of ‘Moon holding the sun’ just after entering the country, digging busy schedule.
Jung II-woo posted these beautiful photos in Sina Weibo, a Facebook like platform in China. He gives a most exciting news to his Chinese fans…that he would be visiting soon. I thought these post matched perfectly with the Lunar New Year that has just started!
Happy Lunar New Year of the Dog!
Update 2/29/18
I found a video and a magazine where he is wearing that same polka dotted vest and pants… so I decided to place them here.
WITAT
Because it is the year of the dog…here he is at a Fan Meeting with A-woo:
And I have to say… I love that polka dot vest!!! I really love polka dots… I have one too but mine is black with white dots. I also own two polka dotted tights and 5? 6? pairs of polka dot socks… I love combining polka dots with stripes a lot!
Hello! Happy Valentine’s Day! And… Happy another day of loving our Jung II-woo 씨! My trip to New York was fantastic! I came back enriched, inspired and a bit over stimulated! My senses are all in overdrive!
In thinking what to do for Valentine’s Day, I decided to do a mix of photos from “The Moon that Embraces the Sun” and my trip to New York! I really wanted to convey the message that where ever I go, Jung II-woo is always with me! and I also wanted to share some of the things I saw there…so this will be a very anecdotical post.
The reason why I went to New York was to attend a Foreign Language Conference. This is a bit of that:
Yeah… this was very outer space:
Every afternoon, after we were done, my colleague and I went to museums, and places in New York. We also took time to explore and see friends on our own…
Our hotel was a block away from the MoMA, the Museum of Modern Art, so we started there! Though there wasn’t an exhibit being shown to the general public yet (it was members only), we saw their amazing permanent collection. One of (if not) my favorite art work is there: Starry night from Van Gogh. I never… ever!… get tired of looking at it! Nor it seems many people…
There is a really great view to a sculpture garden in this museum, where there is a giant rose…It served as an inspiration for one of my photos…
This is the view with the rose:
Yes! That’s me reflected in a really cool interactive piece:
The rainbow sparkles and this man’s jacket…
Inspired this:
It was a variation of this:
That was inspired in the famous:
The next day… I went to the Guggenheim museum. I had always wanted to see this masterpiece of architecture…Frank Lloyd Wright’s last work. I was so impressed…the entire piece is an ode to the circle and geometry. The simplicity of lines and the play between asymmetry and symmetry was so beautiful! I took in every bit of its space. There was an exhibit called “Take my Breath Away” by Dahn Vo, but it did not take my breath away… My breath was already gone because of Frank Lloyd Wright! And now enjoy Jung II-woo and the Guggenheim:
Yes! Jung II-woo…you too Take My Breath Away!
At the very top of the spiral? circular showcase, there is a skylight…
There was an triangular staircase also…and the next slide after that is the shop seen from above. It was so scary for me to take these photos…I do not like heights. I know it’s really weird for a dreamer!
This is the cafe. You can see Frank Lloyd Wright in a photo taken during the museum’s construction. You can also see treat I had…
…and then I saw this kid doing what I felt like doing…spinning! This atrium…is an invitation to spin! the feeling must be amazing…but as an adult people would think I’m crazy, so I couldn’t do it… darn! But… I took a video and that gave the excuse to at least do one turn!
Are you dizzy? Yeah…so great!
After the Guggenheim, I decided to stop by the “Imagine” Memorial for John Lennon. I had always wanted to see it. I listened to the song Imagine and sat on a nearby bench… it was near sunset, and at times nobody was there…so I was able to think of John and Peace. I wish for his spirit to be in peace. He did not have much of it in life…
What I never imagined! was that they would play this song at the Olympics Opening Ceremony! I cried when I saw it …because I realized how connected I am to Jung II-woo and his country. It turns out I visited the memorial on the same day as the opening of the olympics… how amazing is that?!!! I do not believe in coincidences… I know that everything that happens to us is meant to be. We are all connected… if we all thought of peace…we would have it! So I’ll keep sending all my energy of peace along with my students (they have the best energy!)… for as long as I can. I am very spiritual…though I am not religious. I do my own thing…which is a mix of many things!
Ha… I can dream right?! Did I mention it was really cold here? I am in awe that Jung II-woo can film in those thin clothes in the cold… my hand was freezing!
Oh…how beautiful that was!
Imagine all the people…living life in peace! You may say I am a dreamer…but I’m not the only one…I hope someday you will join us and the world will be as one!
Love you John Lennon…your energy is always in me!
That night I met a friend for dinner. He was a colleague at school that moved to New York two years ago. He had the best suggestion! Koreatown!!! I didn’t know it existed! I was so excited to visit it! And even though it’s only about two blocks…you feel like you are in Korea! We had a lovely meal…and I tried Oppa’s favorite soup! Yes, Doenjang Jjigae. It was so delicious! Then we walked around. We went into a bookstore and that was so surreal! Everything was in Korean! Sadly it made me realize how little I know…I have a lonnnnnnnng way to go. I can’t wait until I visit South Korea!
Can you spot Lee Min-ho and Poporo:
I didn’t realize that Poporo was that famous in South Korea…!
While I was taking a ride back from the Guggenheim, we passed by the MET. The Metropolitan Art Museum. My eyes widened in surprise!!! A huge banner of Michelangelo was hanging! I immediately looked it up…and it turned out to be a not to be missed exhibit with over 100 of his drawings! The next day we went there…
That’s Jung II-woo looking at Michelangelo’s draft of St. Peter’s dome. It was such an amazing exhibit… the best I’ve seen of him ever! It included some of his studies for the Sixtine Chapel and the Duomo of St. Peter’s. There have been many artists in this world, but he is among the masters of art. His work and dedication… is out of this world!
This was a large rare draft he made…you can see how he stuck the smaller papers together…
You can see how large it was in comparison to this little girl. Poor little thing…she was so tired and bored…eventually she left the exhibit crying in the arms of her dad.
This was the closest thing to “Pieta”…and again I was reminded of Jung II-woo and his recent post…
There was a room where they recreated part of the Sixtine Chapel, and they set up many of his studies for it… it was so impressive. They would show you even the location in the ceiling! Bravo curators…BRAVO!
If you have the means… Do not miss this masterpiece! The Sixtine Chapel…there is nothing like it in the world! It was made by one man…!!!
I have been very lucky… I have been there… I will never forget it …after walking behind this huge line of people for like an hour…we stepped into this room and boom! It hit me so hard… my eyes water every time I remember what I felt. It’s like someone punches you in the chest and you can barely gasp air…that kind of feeling! I have two books that I recommend greatly about Michelangelo:
The bottom one, I bought on my first trip there… the second I bought later on. It is an amazing historical account of what Michelangelo went through to paint the Sixtine Chapel. He suffered so much. Against common believe…Michelangelo did not paint the ceiling laying down! He would paint looking up until the pain in his neck was unbearable! Imagine how many hours he did this for… sigh!
Last but not least… we went to Times Square… I had a lot of fun with these images… the absurdity of how calm he is, and how loud Times Square is, the contrast of color and the old versus the new…
Sweet…
…Love!
I took this photo from inside the M & M store. It served as the base for the first photo.
Time Square has a very special energy…this rush of WOWness!
Well I hope you enjoyed this post trip! Remember love comes from inside of you… send it all over the world!
Jung II-woo…my love I send to you everyday! I am with you in mind and heart…
